Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos with commentary that analyze the representations of women that are prevalent in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in popular media. As well as working to highlight the problems surrounding the harassment and targeted assaults on women and as well as other minorities, she is determined to break down stereotypes that are associated with pop culture. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in political and social thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is highly sought after and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thought. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s determined to make a series of web videos that would examine how gender is represented in games. But, she was the target of cyber-bullying. The attack did not stop her, rather it strengthened her determination as a feminist critic of media. Her notable contributions to the feminist field have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency, an educational non-profit that examines the way women are depicted in popular culture narratives.
